General Info

Description

Acivir® is manufactured by Cipla an antiviral drug with Acyclovir as an active ingredient.

Acyclovir belongs to a class called synthetic nucleoside analogues and works by inhibiting the DNA polymerase of the virus that prevents it from spreading. This medication is not a cure for the virus; it can stop the herpes simplex virus from replicating its DNA, thereby allowing the body`s immune system to deal with the infection.

Acyclovir is active against Herpes Simplex virus types 1 and 2, Varicella Zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus.

Acivir® can be used to treat chickenpox, shingles (herpes zoster), cold sores around the mouth (herpes simplex), and genital herpes.

Acivir® can be also used to treat eczema herpeticum, herpes infections of the skin, eyes, nose, and mouth in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); to treat oral hairy leukoplakia (a condition that causes hairy white or gray-colored patches on the tongue or inside of the cheek); and with patients undergoing marrow transplantation for prevention of cytomegalovirus infection.

Dosage

For the treatment of acute herpes zoster, the usual Acivir® dosage is 800 mg every 4 hours orally, 5 times daily for 7 to 10 days.

For the treatment of initial genital herpes, the usual Acivir® dosage is 200 mg every 4 hours, 5 times daily for 10 days.

For chronic suppressive therapy for recurrent genital herpes, the usual Acivir® dosage is 400 mg 2 times daily for up to 12 months, followed by re-evaluation.

For treatment of chickenpox in children (2 years of age and older), the usual Acivir® dosage is 20 mg/kg per dose orally 4 times daily (80 mg/kg/day) for 5 days and 800 mg 4 times daily for 5 days for adults and children over 40 kg.

Acivir® should be taken with food to prevent an upset stomach and plenty of fluids throughout the treatment.

Missing a dose

Do not take a double dose. If you miss a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember about the missed dose. If it is the time for the next dose, you should continue your regular dosing schedule.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, you should seek emergency medical attention or contact your health care provider immediately.

Symptoms of Acivir® overdose include: headache, neurological disorders, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, renal failure, lethargy, convulsions, and coma.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F), and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.
